The Kokoda Track - Anzac Day
Papua New Guinea is a young nation, but one that has endured a colourful and, at times, bloody history. The Kokoda Track is one of many walking tracks that existed long before Europeans came into this part of the world. During the course of World War II, the Japanese decided to use this trail as a means of launching a ground attack against the Australians in Port Moresby. On this trek, we set out to explore the complete route of the Japanese campaign, starting from the little village of Buna on the north coast (where the Japanese landed) and then working our way west, using road transport to Kokoda where we start walking the track. By the time we arrive at Owers' Corner some days later, we have completed a crossing of the central spine of Papua, having seen all the main battle sites and also gained an appreciation of the rugged beauty of the region, as exemplified by the Owen Stanley Ranges. On Anzac Day, the day after the end of our trek, we will drive out early for the dawn service at Bomana War Cemetery where many of the Australian soldiers who died on the Kokoda Track, and in other theatres of the New Guinea campaign, lie buried. Our experience and challenges of having walked the Kokoda Track in peacetime just a few days earlier will create for us an added poignancy at what is already a most moving service.
